The Problem Called Cab-Riding
It's an expensive habit that everyone of us are guilty of.
I am guilty of this too.
From my home in Quezon City, riding a cab to my work at The Fort would cost P160+. P170 total, including the 'mandatory' tip. If I take public transportation though, it will cost me less than P40 to get to the office. That's P850 versus P200 in a week and a whopping P3400 versus P800 in a month. It even costs me more to ride a cab in a week than commute to work for a month!
Aside from the expense, we are also confronted with the hassle of cab-riding.
Let us compare cab-riding to taking the Metro Rail Transit on EDSA. When you ride a cab, just like when you take the bus along EDSA, you are bound to sit through the traffic. Some cab drivers even choose to take the lane that moves least because the new meters run the same now whether the cab is moving or not. Unlike before, meter charges take more time to change when the cab is not moving. That's why, if you noticed, in the past, most cab drivers opt to take the fastest lane.
When we're stuck in traffic on public transportation, most of us doze off. Now, aside from the rate of fare, the difference between being in a cab and being in a bus is that it is far more dangerous to sleep in a cab than in a bus.
And that opens up the dangers of cab-riding. Because most cabs are driven by men, and most men are pigs, it poses more danger to women cab-riders in terms of sexual harassment. But, cab-riding does pose equal danger to both men and women when it comes to robbery.
Of course, not all cab drivers are sexual offenders or robbers. Some are attentive. Most are skilled, good in directions and fast drivers. Some are even nice and chatty.
But then, we can't really trust the latter too much. From what I have noticed, most of the cabs with jacked up meters have 'nice and chatty' drivers. It seems like they are using their ability to chat away to distract the passenger from the raging meter. You see, 'nice and chatty' is the new 'dishonest.'
I know that there is never really a need to ride a cab, especially to work since my work schedule does not change everyday. I should be able to get up on time to take the MRT. Heck, taking the MRT actually takes the same time as riding a cab because of EDSA rush hour traffic.
Most times, I dismiss this expense as the price of comfort but, as we see here, cab-riding is NOT comfortable at all.
